Why should I keep it in the fridge?

To preserve VSL#3 keep it in the fridge. The bacteria have been freeze-dried and are live; it is best that they are kept refrigerated for any length of time.

Can I keep them out of the fridge?

Yes, for up to one week without affecting the quality of the product. However, VSL#3 must remain at a temperature below 25°C during that time.

Does it matter that my VSL#3 is being delivered out of the fridge via the normal post?

No it doesn’t, VSL#3 can be kept out of the fridge for up to 7 days. However, you must remember to put your VSL#3 in the fridge as soon as you get it.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are rarely reported and generally consist of bloating but this is understood to be a temporary effect as your gut adapts itself to the new bacteria.

Does it contain any allergens?

VSL#3 does not contain: gluten, crustacean shellfish, molluscs, eggs, fish, peanuts, tree nuts, soybeans, milk and lactose, celery, mustard, sesame, lupin and sulphur dioxide at levels above 10mg/kg, or 10mg/litre, expressed as SO2.

Can I also be prescribed VSL#3?

The Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances has given approval for VSL#3 for use under the supervision of a healthcare professional for the maintenance of remission of ileo-anal pouchitis only in adults as induced by antibiotics. For all other conditions please discuss with your healthcare professional.
